Regional Projects and Strategy Advisory - Fixed Term One Year

Great South is Southland’s regional development agency, and we are focused on creating even better lives through sustainable development for all that call Murihiku Southland home. 

The Regional Projects and Strategy Advisor is a new role to support the  implementation of projects and initiatives identified in Beyond 2025 – Southland’s Long-Term Plan and regional strategy that supports economic development.

About the Role

As the Regional Projects and Strategy Advisor, the position holder will support and champion opportunities for Murihiku Southland identified through the regional strategy. 

The role requires exceptional capability in project management which will be applied to strategic initiatives as they are implemented. The position holder is expected to identify external funding opportunities to support regional projects, as may be required. Funding opportunities may include: central government, local government, iwi, funding agencies, community groups and/or private investment.

This role will include the preparation of business cases and funding applications in partnership with multiple stakeholders and funders requiring  collaboration with shareholders, stakeholders, local and central government and with the wider community. The role will be responsible to prepare submissions that support advocacy of key issues for the region.

About You

You will have comprehensive knowledge and deep understanding of Murihiku Southland and how the region functions through its people, economy, and environment.

You will have proven ability and experience in preparing successful funding applications and business cases and will have the ability to use data and insights appropriately to support advocacy, business case development and strategic planning. 

You will competently manage multiple tasks and projects using excellent time management skills and project management methodologies. You will have exceptional communication, presentation, and report preparation skills with a proven track record to facilitate positive outcomes in a complex environment, with diverse stakeholders, and conflicting priorities.

General Manager Tourism & Events

About Us:

Great South is Southland’s regional development agency, and we are focused on creating even better lives through sustainable development for all that call Murihiku Southland home.

The GM Tourism & Events is a repurposed role that will lead the regions promotional activities including regional marketing, events, and destination management in line with the Murihiku Southland Destination Strategy. The role will also oversee management of the two Regional Tourism Organisations (RTOs) owned by Great South, Visit Fiordland and Visit Southland. 

About the Role:

As a dynamic and experienced tourism manager, you will lead our dedicated team to implement agreed projects and initiatives from the Murihiku Southland Destination Strategy, Events Strategy and Business Events Strategy, all supporting tourism as an economic driver for the region.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and executing work plans that align to the company’s Statement of Intent (SOI) including activities to boost tourism, manage large-scale events, and enhance the overall visitor experience. This role requires a visionary leader with a passion for tourism, exceptional management skills, and the ability to foster strong partnerships with stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Strategic Delivery: Support with implementation of tourism and events strategies to increase visitor numbers, enhance visitor experiences, and boost local economy.
  • Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and inspire a diverse team of professionals in the tourism and events department, ensuring high performance and professional development.
  • Event Management: Support the Event Manager to plan, coordinate, and execute major events ensuring they are successful, safe, and align with our brand and strategic objectives.
  • Marketing and Promotion: Collaborate with the marketing team to develop and execute marketing campaigns that promote the region as a premier tourism destination.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain strong relationships with local businesses, government agencies, industry representative agencies, community organisations, iwi, and other key stakeholders.
  • Financial Management: Manage the budget for the tourism and events department, ensuring financial targets are met and resources are used efficiently.
  • Performance Monitoring: Establish KPIs and monitor performance to ensure goals are met, providing regular reports to senior management.

What we’re looking for from you:

  • You will have extensive marketing experience ideally in tourism and/or events.
  • You will be a creative and outgoing person that enjoys working with and leading others.
  • Be an exceptional communicator, both written and verbal.
  • Be super organised and keep on top of all budgets and contract commitments. 
  • Have experience in caring for and supporting a high performing team.
  • Experienced in strategy implementation ensuring successful outcomes.
  • Experienced in stakeholder relationships and management with a strong knowledge of Te Ao Māori and the ability to give effect to the principals of Te Tiriti o Waitangi while working cohesively with our Papatipu rūnaka.
